AVIF is an image format based on technology from the AV1 video ecosystem. It can store photographic images with efficient compression and supports features such as transparency and high dynamic range in capable workflows.
Why AVIF can be efficient
Modern compression tools can represent image detail more efficiently than older formats in many cases. That can translate into smaller downloads for a similar visual result, especially when images are encoded carefully.
There is no universal size guarantee
Some images compress exceptionally well while others do not. Encoder settings, source content and desired quality matter. Always compare actual outputs instead of assuming a fixed percentage saving.
Compatibility and editing
Browser support is strong in modern environments, but some desktop tools and legacy workflows may still be more comfortable with JPEG or PNG. If an image will be downloaded for editing by a broad audience, consider providing a conventional alternative.
When AVIF is useful
AVIF can be attractive for performance-sensitive websites that can test their delivery pipeline and provide fallbacks when necessary. Keep original source assets so you can re-encode as support and requirements evolve.
